This Westboro home, built in 2016 on a severed lot, has all the features of a well-designed, super energy-efficient modern home.

The open kitchen is a stylish space for entertaining, featuring a multi-level Cambria quartz countertop island, the latest appliances, a dual-temperature beverage centre, breakfast bar seating for four, and entrances to both front and back covered decks. The soothing master bedroom looks out to the two-storey hall, includes a gas fireplace, and connects to a luxurious spa-type ensuite and a walk-in closet to get lost in. Walnut flooring throughout gives the home a warm intimate feel, as does the living room’s double-sided fireplace. We custom designed every aspect with our empty-nest client in mind: low-maintenance exterior materials, heated floors, and relaxing perks like the screened-in hot tub. Personal touches were added as well, such as the screened glass wall in the foyer with a falling gingko leaf pattern to match the carefully preserved tree in the front yard.

Energy efficiency was a priority, and so we designed and built the house for that purpose. Eight inches of wall insulation, R50 roof insulation, and careful attention to vapour and air barriers keeps the house comfortable year-round and reduces heating and cooling costs. Massive roof overhangs provide passive summer solar shading but also allow (during winter months) deep solar penetration for heat gain through the very large high-performance Energy Star windows.
