With the urban population growth south of the Ottawa International Airport and east of the Rideau River, a critical need arose to provide emergency services. This new 12,800 square foot Fire Station is located on City owned property on the south side of Earl Armstrong Road between Spratt Road and Shoreline Drive. The functional portion of the building (apparatus and support spaces) responds directly to the street allowing quick and unfettered vehicular access to the road. The support spaces are oriented directly to the south in order to take advantage of the sun in lighting the spaces with natural light rather than by artificial means. The wedge that is created by the orientation of the functional and support spaces holds the operational and public tenants such as watch room, captain’s office, and public lobby and entrance.
